  • Description

The Argentine Chilean foreign ministers, Brigadier Carlos Pastor and Senor Hernan Cubillos, met in Buenos Aires on Tuesday (12 December) for talks on the Beagle Channel islands dispute, which has raised fears of war between their two countries. Their twelve-hour talks, seen as a last-ditch effort to avert an armed clash, ended without any agreement being announced, and tension in both countries remained high.

SYNOPSIS: Newsmen waiting outside the foreign ministry to speak to the ministers. Brigadier Pastor had broken his talks to spend more than an hour with President Jorge Videla and leading military officers. The Chilean Ambassador in Argentina, Senor Ergio Onofre Jarpa, had been involved.

Senor Cubillos merges. Six months of earlier, bilateral talks ended on November the second. These, too, failed to bring agreement, and the two governments agreed to put the issue before a mediator. Argentina has insisted the mediator would only supervise further bilateral talks, but Chile has said further talks of this kind would be pointless.

The Chilean military government said it would take the issue before the International Court of Justice in the Hague if the foreign ministers could not reach agreement. Both countries have moved warships to waters near the islands.
