  • Description

VISNEWS interviewed South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Chung Wan immediately after an emergency meeting of the Republic of Korea Cabinet on the Japanese proposed repatriation of Koreans resident in Japan to North Korea, Feb 13.

South Korea has used diplomatic channels and street demonstrations to protest against this project. The Japanese Government intends sending the exiles to North Korea, at their own request. About 600,000 Koreans are resident in Japan and between 1,000 and 110,000 are reported asking for return to North Korea.

These repatriation plans coincided with attempts by South Korean and Japanese Governments to establish normal relations. South Korea informed the Japanese Government the present talks were regarded as "ruptured" and warned that Korea will pursue its own interests. South Korea Defence Ministry added that naval and air forces are ready to go into action "at any time", but no orders had yet been issued.

Thousands of students and workers drove through Seoul in trucks demonstrating against Japan shouting and carrying slogans: "We oppose to death sending Korean residents in Japan to Red-occupied north Korea", "Let's rescue our brethren from being thrown into Communist slavery".
