  • Description

ABOUT 700 MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES FIRST CAVALRY DIVISION (AIR-MOBILE) -- MOST OF THEM MECHANICS AND HELICOPTER CREWS -- HAD BEEN PUT ASHORE FROM THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER, BOXER, AT THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE PORT CITY OF QUINHON BY LATE YESTERDAY (MONDAY). THE DIVISION, WHICH CONSISTS OF ABOUT 16,000 MEN IN ALL, IS SPECIALLY TRAINED TO MOVE SWIFTLY BY HELICOPTER TO THREATENED AREAS IN GUERILLA WARS.

ALTHOUGH AMERICAN MILITARY OFFICIALS HAVE REFUSED TO MAKE PUBLIC THE DIVISION'S EVENTUAL DESTINATION, ABOUT 3,000 VIETNAMESE WORKERS HAVE BEEN BUILDING A COMPOUND NEAR QUINHON FOR WEEKS. ON ONE OF THE ROADS LEADING TO THE COMPOUND IS A SIGN WELCOMING THE TROOPS TO THE AREA.
