  • Description

After earlier declaring unwillingness to run as vice-Presidential candidate on the Kennedy ticket, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Texan Senate Majority leader, mounted the Democratic National Convention podium and thanked the delegates. He pledged himself to stand 'beside and behind the next President of the USA - John F. Kennedy.'
Kennedy's move to placate Southern segregationists for the strong Civil Rights plank in the Democrat Presidential platform nearly backfired - turning liberal northerners against him. Some delegates spoke of betrayal by Kennedy in picking Johnson.

As moves by Southern delegations to nominate a competitor to Johnson fell through after many hours of caucusing, it seems that the south might come out in full favour of the Kennedy-Johnson ticket.
