Background: The United Nations Steering Committee recommended today (18 September) that the U.N.Assembly take up two controversial issues at this session; membership for Red China and South Vietnamese government action against that nations Buddhists.
The vote in favor of taking up the China issue was twelve to one, with eight nations abstaining.Russia, Britain and Canada were among those in favor; the United States was among the abstainers.Nationalist China cast the lone negative vote.
Albania requested that the Chinese admission be considered at this session.During debate on the request, the Nationalist Chinese delegate said that the Albanian foreign minister must be joking when he referred to Red China as a peace-loving nation.Soviet Ambassador Nikolai Fedorenko reiterated previous demands that Nationalist China from the world body and replaced by Communist China.He gave no hint in demeanor or speech of the recent Moscow-Peking split.
