    Six thousand paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division were dropped near Joanna and Newberry, South Carolina (4 August) to launch the first major ground action in Operation Swift Strike III, the biggest peacetime manoeuvres ever held in the United States.

    The paratroopers with their guns, vehicles and other equipment were loaded into C-119 Flying Boxcars and C-130 Hercules transport planes.The drop began shortly after 6 A.M.By 8:25 A.M.three battle groups were on the ground, and aircraft began dropping earth-moving equipment to prepare assault landing strips.

    Fifteen paratroopers were injured slightly in the jump.Some of the heavy equipment dropped with the troops, landed precariously close to civilian spectators, but there were no injuries to civilians.

    As Operation Swift Strike III reaches its peak about 100-thousand troops will be engaged.
