  • Description

THE ARMY WAS CALLED INTO PARIS TODAY (FRIDAY) -- TO PREVENT THE FRENCH CAPITAL BEING OVERWHELMED WITH REFUSE. HUNDREDS OF SOLDIERS OPERATED DUST CARTS TO SHIFT THE MASSIVE PILES OF GARBAGE ACCUMULATING DURING A STRIKE BY PARIS DUSTMEN.

THE PARIS PREFECTURE, RESPONSIBLE FOR CALLING IN THE ARMY, SAID THAT THE SOLDIERS COULD PROBABLY KEEP PACE WITH THE CITY'S DAILY OF 3,000 TONS OF RUBBISH.

BUT THE PROBLEM IS TO DISPOSE OF ABOUT 10,000 TONS OF REFUSE WHICH ACCUMULATED DURING THE WEEK-LONG DUSTMEN'S STRIKE. THIS DANGEROUS BUILD-UP OF DECOMPOSING REFUSE IN THE STREETS HAS LED TO FEARS OF A PLAGUE OF RATS.

VARYING NUMBERS OF THE 2,400 PARIS GARBAGE COLLECTORS AND 1,600 OTHER REFUSE SERVICE EMPLOYEES HAVE BEEN ON STRIKE FROM DAY TO DAY TO BACK UP THEIR CLAIMS FOR IMPROVED PAY AND WORKING CONDITIONS.
