The Eighth Arab Oil Congress has been opened in the Algerian capital, Algiers. The meeting is attended by five hundred representatives of Arab countries and oil companies - as well as foreign observers and other exports. The conference was opened on Sunday (28 May) by Algeria's President Beumedienne.
During their discussions a major topic will be the claim of Arab ail-producing nations to a bigger share in the operation of western oil firms.
Another topic - raised by President Boumedienne in his opening speech is the present dispute between Iraq and the Iraq Petroleum Group (IPC). The Iraq government has threatened to take action against the IPC unless it meets the Government's demand for state participation in the Group, and an increase in production.
President Boumedionee pledged Algeria's support for the Iraq Government and said he hoped other Arab governments would follow its example.
The congress continues in Algiers until Saturday (3 June).
