  • Description

The Shah of Iran and Empress Farah contained their five-day visit to Egypt on Saturday (11 January), touring ancient temples hewn into the rock above the Nile at Abu Simbel.

Accompanied by Egypt's President Anwar Sadat and Mr. Sadat, the Royal couple spent the fourth day of their state visit examining one of the Pharaonic tombs built by Ramses the Second over three thousand years ago. In 1969, the shrines were moved from their original site when they were threatened by the rising waters of Lake Nasser -- behind the Aswan Dam.

Exploring the wonders of ancient Egypt, though, was not the only business of the day. The Shah and President Sadat took advantage of their flight from Luxor, and their return to the capital, Cairo, to continue their official discussions.

Egyptian sources have said that the two leaders are considering general strategy for the region, and ways of strengthening ties between their countries. Iran has already promised Egypt one thousand million US dollars (GBP435 million sterling) in aid. The money will be used in the restoration of the war-damaged harbour of Port Said and to purchase 1,000 Iranian buses.
