    THE CAMEROUN REPUBLIC LIES ON THE GULF OF GUINEA BETWEEN NIGERIA TO THE WEST AND THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC AND CHAD TO THE EAST. IT HAS AN AREA OF 160,000 SQUARE MILES YIELDING CROPS OF COCOA, COFFEE, COTTON, BANANAS, GROUNDNUTS, TIMBER AND PALM-OIL.
    FRANCE STILL RETAINS EXTENSIVE FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL ASSOCIATIONS WITH HER FORMER COLONY. FRENCH TECHNICAL ADVISERS ASSIST CAMEROUN GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS APPORTION FUNDS RECEIVED UNDER FRENCH FINANCIAL AID SCHEMES. THERE ARE 4,000 EUROPEANS IN THE 60,000 POPULATION OF YAOUNDE, WHERE PRESIDENT AHMADJOU AHIDJO AND HIS GOVERNMENT ADMINISTRATE THE COUNTRY.
    WELCOMING PRESIDENT AHIDJO TO WASHINGTON FOR A STATE VISIT 12 MONTHS AGO, PRESIDENT KENNEDY SPOKE OF THE AFRICAN'S LEADERSHIP IN "UNITING A COUNTRY WITH DIFFERENT LANGUAGES WHICH HAD NOT KNOWN A SENSE OF NATIONHOOD AND COMMUNITY UNTIL RECENT YEARS." MOST OF THE CAMEROUN'S 4,500,000 PEOPLE ARE OF FRENCH INFLUENCE AND, THEREFORE, THE FEDERATION IS BEING GOVERNED ON THE FRENCH SYSTEM. HOWEVER, THE FORMER CAMEROONIANS HAVE NOT REMAINED WHOLE-HEARTEDLY APPROVING OF THE FRENCH WAY OF LIFE.
