  • Description

In the southern Polish city of Cracow, many citizens mark the Christmas season by displaying model churches they have built during the year. Some have spent months working on the wood and paper-mache churches which they can sell for a small sum.

Coming from a state where millions are practising Roman Catholics, the churches mark a religious tradition still flourishing after 23 years of communist Government. And, recognising this continuity, Polish Premier Edward Gierek has been seeking church support for his new economic and social programmes.
