  • Description

President Kenyatta, in a speech at a mass rally at Thika - in his parliamentary constituency - exhorted his countrymen last Saturday to impress the world with their discipline and honesty.

Among the crowd of many thousands were Mrs. Kenyatta, and kenya's Minister for Local Government and the Governor of the Province.

President Kenyatta had earlier opened a jute factory at Thika, which is 18 miles (28 km) north-east of Nairobi.

He asked his audience to realise that Uhuru (Independence) meant hard work, earning an honest living and avoiding the kind of laziness which, he said, led the thefts and robberies. He wanted citizens to co-operate with the Government, which was their own Government, to obey Kenya's laws and to be proud of Africa's resources and potential. God, he said, had blessed the continent with minerals, with gold and diamonds, and with abundant sunshine which others came to seek.

President Kenyatta finally called on people of other races to respect his country's citizens; he would not, he said, tolerate anyone who despised the African in his own country.
