  • Description

A relative outsider come in at 25-1 on Wednesday (6 June) to win the 1973 Derby at Epsom. The winner was Morston, running -- and winning -- his second-ever race. It was jockey Eddie Hide's first Derby win too.

Morston burst out into the lead of the mile-and-a-half race, after the first furlong. He held off a challenge from Cavo Doro, ridden by Lester Piggott, throughout most of the race. Third in the field of 25 runners was Freefoot.

The winning horse, owned by Mr. Arthur Budgett, is half-brother to Blakeney, the 1969 Derby winner. Mr. Budgett, saddled Blakeney also. Morston's 1973 win earned his owner a purse of GBP66-thousand sterling (165-thousand dollars U.S.).
