    ABBE FULBERT YOULOU, THE FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE CONGO (BRAZZAVILLE) WAS CONDEMNED TO DEATH IN HIS ABSENCE BY A PEOPLE'S TRIBUNAL SITTING IN BRAZZAVILLE ON JUNE 8.TWO SENIOR OFFICIALS IN THE ABBE'S GOVERNMENT, CHARGED WITH HIM, WERE ACQUITTED FOR LACK OF EVIDENCE.THEY WERE THE FORMER MINISTER OF INFORMATION, M.APOLLINAIRE BAZINGA, AND A ONE-TIME SECRETARY OF STATE ATTACHED TO THE PRESIDENCY, M.RENE KINZOUNZA.

    THE ABBE YOULOU WAS FORCED TO RESIGN FROM THE PRESIDENCY IN AUGUST 1963 - AND WAS THEN DETAINED IN BRAZZAVILLE UNDER HOUSE ARREST.RECENTLY HE ESCAPED - AND CROSSED THE RIVER INTO NEIGHBOURING LEOPOLDVILLE.

    THE TRIBUNAL WAS ESTABLISHED BY A SPECIAL LAW LAST SEPTEMBER.MEMBERS WERE NOMINATED BY THE CONGO (BRAZZAVILLE) RULING PARTY - THE NATIONAL REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENT.
