THE TAXIING TESTS ARE NOW OVER AND I CAN PRONOUNCE THE "PLANE FIT TO FLY". THERE WERE TWO TESTS YESTERDAY -- THE FIRST INVOLVED THE USE OF THE BRAKE PARACHUTE: AND DURING THE SECOND, THE CREW SUDDENLY STOPPED ONE OF THE FOUR ENGINES TO TEST THE AIRCRAFT'S CAPABILITY EVEN IF ONE ENGINE FAILED -- SO GREAT WAS THE POWER FROM THE OTHER THREE ROLLS ROYCE OLYMPUS 593 JETS THAT, IN TURCAT'S OWN WORDS, "WE HARDLY NOTICED IT."
WEATHER PERMITTING, THE MAIDEN FLIGHT WILL TAKE PLACE EARLY ON SATURDAY MORNING, ONE YEAR AND ONE DAY LATER THAN THE ORIGINAL TARGET DATE FOR FIRST FLIGHT -- FEBRUARY 28, 1968.
