Background: More than 200 years of royal rule in the Khmer Republic, formerly Cambodia, came to an end on Saturday (November 3rd, 1973), when the last of the Khmer royal family left Phnom Penh.

Since the overthrow of prince Norodom Sihanouk in March, 1970, the large royal family has been under virtual house arrest in the national capital.

However, over the last few weeks, closely guarded talks have resulted in the Khmer Government authorising the family to leave their homeland. It is believed they will now join Prince Sihanouk in exile in Canton, People's Republic of China. Those who left included the monarch, Queen Kossomak, Prince Sihanouk's daughter and two of his sone.

Security at Phnom Penh airport was tight as the royal family arrived to fly to China by Air France jet just after dawn. Police checked all cars arriving at the airport and scrutinised the occupants. Journalists and photographers were banned from entering the airport terminal.
