  • Description

About twenty-five-thousand Italian farmers demonstrated for two hours through the streets of Rome today (Friday, May 7) to back their demands for agricultural development. They added to the traffic chaos already caused by a strike of twenty-five-thousand municipal workers--including traffic police.

Meanwhile, as far as the farmers' demonstration was concerned, it has been a year of unrest throughout the European agricultural community--mass protests have already been held in Germany and Belgium, and two people were killed in a Common Market farmers' demonstration as price increases were under debate in Brussels.

SYNOPSIS: About twenty-five-thousand Italian farmers marched through the streets of Rome for two hours on Friday to back their demands for agricultural development. the farmers, who want a better deal, carried banners with slogans such as "green Plan, yes; red Plan, no."
This year has already seen unrest throughout the European agricultural community, with mass demonstrations--including Italian farmers--in Germany and Belgium, in which two people died in violence.

One of the strongest and noisiest groups in Friday's protest came from Reggio Calabrio, the little agricultural town involved in violent riots earlier this year over the choice of a neighbouring town as provincial capital. As the farmers marched through the City streets, they added to traffic chaos already caused by a strike of twenty-five-thousand municipal workers--including traffic policemen.
