Background: President Philibert Tsiranana of the Malagasy Republic has made his first public appearance since handing over his powers to General Gabriel Ramanatsoa.
President Teiranana appeared with the General at a military garade in Tansnarive marking the 12th anniversary of the country's independence from France.
The President still remain titular Head of State -- a position he has held since independence -- but on May 18 he handed powers of government to General ramanantsoa after widespread rioting and strikes in his country.
The anniversary of independence has traditionally become a time of large-scale celebrations in the Malagasy Republic, but this year they were shortened and, apart form some religious ceremonies, were strictly military in character.
SYNOPSIS: The capital of the Malagasy Republic, Tananarive, has been the centre of celebrations marking the twelfth anniversary of the country's independence. A military parade produced the first public appearance of President Tsiranana since he handed powers of government to General Ramanatsoa in May. The two men took the salute together then sat side by side on the dais while units of Malagasy's military forces marched past.
