  • Description

President Julius Nyerere reviewed Chinese-trained troops of Tanzania's Army yesterday (Wednesday) during a parade marking the Republic's ninth anniversary of independence from Britain.

Accompanied by Vice-President Abeid Karume, the Tanzanian leader took the salute as units of the army marched past to cheers from the crowd. A column of green-shirted members from the ruling TANU Party Youth League also marched past.

The parade ended with young Tanzanians performing Chinese-style acrobatics. They carried a replica of the torch placed on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro nine years ago--on the day that Tanzania became an independent state.

The celebrations were the cue for a renewed outburst against the recent invasions of Guinea in the Tanzanian press. The TANU party newspaper, the Nationalist, suggested that Guinea had been invaded simply because, like Tanzania, the country was successfully building a socialist, non-aligned state. The paper called on all Tanzanians to be prepared to defend their liberty as they celebrated nine years of independence.
