TRANSCRIPT SEQ 8: QUESTIONER: "Do you think any administration headed by you could be acceptable to Westminister?"

MR. CRAIG: "Westminister has through the bad advice its got completely misjudged and miscalculated the issues. Either Westminister has get to get back to the Constitutional realities. They have an obligation to support the government of the day here, whoever it might be. You can't play politics with our constitution and you must be prepared to recognise the basic principles of democracy, and some of the wild talk that has been emerging out of London and encouraged by people over here is an affront to the whole democratic process. The people of Northern Ireland are entitled to have a majority government."

QUESTIONER: "Speaking in purely practical political term,s do you think that Westminister could accept you as the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland?"

MR. CRAIG: "I don't think Westminister has any choice if the people decide to make me Prime Minister."

Background: The resignation of Northern Ireland Prime Minister Mr. Chichester-Clark has sparked off one of the worst crises the province has had to face in its troubled history. But there was no immediate explosion of violence to greet the news of his resignation. It is rather more a crisis for the Westminister government, whose policy of liberal reforms could be endangered. The man most likely to succeed Mr. Chichester-Clark is the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Brian Faulkner. Right-wing Mr. Craig, also tipped for the post, was asked whether he thought the Westminster government would approve of him as the new Prime Minister. He replied it was not up to Westminister, but the Irish people.
