  • Description

By 175 votes to 27, with 95 abstentions, the French Senate Nov. 25, agreed to a request from the Public Prosecutor that the parliamentary immunity of M. Mitterand, a former Minister of Justice, should be suspended.

The vote means that M. Mitterand could be charged with contempt of court - a charge which may be brought against him following a magistrate's recent claim that he deliberately misled police officers investigating the "attempted assassination" incident in which he was involved last October.

After the shooting, M. Mitterand reported that unknown gunmen had fired on his car, but M.Pesquet, a former extreme Right-wing deputy, later claimed that he had arranged the "attack" at M.Mitterand's request.

M.Mitterand, a noted barrister, pleaded his own cause, claiming the Government had used the case for political ends.
