Background: A distinct and new fashion is emerging in Paris where designers are revealing their autumn and winter collections.

Jean Patou's showing on Thursday (19th July) was typical of the new look. His skirts are longer, and his hats have reverted to 1930-s-styles, with many coyly veiled. Black is the favourite for evenings, and for day colours are generally more subdued.

The trend is definitely to a more feminine, slinky and more elegant fashion, wh??? trave??? have no place.

SYNOPSIS: The French designer, Jean Patou, has revealed his new autumn and winter fashions in Paris. The military cut of this coat emphasises the return of the waist to its rightful place and the return to elegance.

Jean Patou's styles are haute couture, but the boutique business has ensured that what's worn in Paris is available throughout the world. Longer coats and boots will be keeping the fashion-conscious warm this winter. Colours are more subdued, but rich, like this tawny scarf which brightens the beige ???. The hat, remintecant of thirties styles, is Patou's favourites, along with the traditional French baret.

Lengths are variable, but do not rise above the knee. This slim fitting cocktail dress follows the natural line of the body - only flaring well below the hip. The collar and cuffs
are of silk and the hat is black felt. Black is the dominant colour for evening wear, and the styles are mainly Classical. Trousers are very much out of favour and some couturiers have not included any in their collections.

This soft grey muslin evening dress is typical of the nw feminine look. The plunging neckline which has survived form the summer, ends in a coy little bow. The fabric is patterned with satin.

Foot fashions for the winter have eschewed the extremes of platforms. Heels are still chunky but are not so high as they were. The keynotes for the coming season are elegance, slinkiness and Classical designs.
