  • Description

The Free China Relief Association, a private group based in taiwan, has been sending food and medicine by balloon to earthquake victims in China.

SYNOPSIS: The use of balloons to get emergency supplies into the severely-hit area of Tangshan is the fifth attempt by the Association to send relief to victims of the Chinese earthquake. China had earlier refused an offer of aid from the Taiwanese authorities who are now giving their full support to the Association's efforts. The supplies packed on the balloons include rice, sugar, blankets, milk powder and soap.

Each balloon is capable of carrying up to 400 pounds (180 kgs). According to the Association, the balloons should cover the 900 miles (1,450 kms) to Tangshan in about 20 hours. But other relief agencies in Taiwan hold little hope of the supplies ever reaching the devastated area. They say China's Air Force jets would intercept them as soon as they enter Chinese air space.
