  • Description

Fuel tanks were recently installed in the Apollo 14 mooncraft, due to blast off from Cape Kennedy on January 31st.

The landing site for the manned craft will be the Fra Mauro Uplands in the centre of the moon's face -- originally the target for Apollo 13, which was brought back to earth in April (1970) without completing its mission after an oxygen tank exploded.

Apollo 14 should have flown last month (October), but was deferred after the near-disaster of Apollo 13. Its landing site on Fra Mauro is believed to consist of rocks 5,000-million year old -- far older than those brought back to earth from the Sea of Tranquility landing by Apollo 11.
