  • Description

ABOUT 350,000 FRENCH STATE EMPLOYEES WENT ON STRIKE TODAY (TUESDAY) FOR HIGHER WAGES AND BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS. THE 24-HOUR STOPPAGE INVOLVED UNDERTAKERS, REFUSE COLLECTORS, SEWER WORKERS, HOSPITAL STAFF AND MUNITION FACTORY WORKERS.

THE STRIKE WAS ONE OF A SERIES BEING CALLED TO SUPPORT DEMANDS BY THE COUNTRY'S TWO LARGEST TRADE UNION ORGANISATIONS - THE GENERAL WORKERS' FEDERATION, AND THE FRENCH DEMOCRATIC CONFEDERATION OF LABOUR - WHO ARE FIGHTING A GOVERNMENT DECISION NOT TO RAISE WAGES BY MORE THAN FIVE PER CENT.

PARIS TRAFFIC WAS BLOCKED BY BANNER-WAVING STRIKERS MARCHING IN GROUPS TO THE TOWN HALL FOR DEMONSTRATIONS.

LATER, THE STRIKERS WENT, THOUSANDS STRONG, TO THE PLACE DE LA BASTILLE FOR A MASS RALLY.

THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS, THOUGH POLICE STOOD BY IN CASE OF TROUBLE.

MORE STRIKERS HAVE BEEN PLANNED FOR THIS WEEK. GROUND AND AIR CREW STAFF OF THE STATE-OWNED AIR FRANCE AIRLINE, BUILDING WORKERS AND POSTAL EMPLOYEES HAVE SAID THAT THEY PLAN STOPPAGES, TOO.
