  • Description

Jan Kodes, a Prague University economics student, yesterday (Saturday) beat Zeljko Franulovic of Yugoslavia in the men's singles final of the French International Open Tennis Championships. It was the first time in the history of the contest that both finalists had come from Eastern Europe.

A near-capacity crowd of 11,000 French (fans were present at the Roland-Garros stadium in Paris to watch the exciting duel between the two young players on the slow clay court.

In a match full of sustained and sometimes brilliant rallies, Kodes recovered from a two-game deficit in the first set and thereafter never looked like being beaten. With a remarkable display of free top spin hitting, he won each of the three sets convincingly.

Franulovic, winner of last year's American hard court championship, is a formidable player on clay, but he could not match Kodes' strength and accuracy yesterday.
