  • Description

THE BUDDHIST CAMPAIGN TO UNSEAT SOUTH VIETNAM'S PRIME MINISTER, MR. TRAN VAN HUONG, HAS BEEN BROADENED TO INCLUDE VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST AMERICA.

IN FRIDAY'S DISTURBANCES THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE PROTESTING AGAINST AMERICAN SUPPORT FOR THE NEWLY REORGANISED GOVERNMENT. A RUNNING BATTLE SOON DEVELOPED BETWEEN TROOPS AND RIOTERS ON THE HALF-MILE STRETCH OF ROAD LEADING FROM THE EMBASSY TO THE CITY MARKET.

AFTER THEY WERE DRIVEN BACK FROM THE EMBASSY BY TROOPS USING TEARGAS, ABOUT 50 DEMONSTRATORS, LED BY A MONK, SMASHED THE GROUND FLOOR WINDOWS AND GLASS DOORS OF THE AMERICAN 'ABRAHAM LINCOLN' LIBRARY WITH STONES AND WOODEN TRAFFIC SIGNS.

POLICE SAID THEY ARRESTED 120 DEMONSTRATORS, INCLUDING 12 MONKS AND EIGHT NUNS.

YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) BUDDHIST LEADERS AND STUDENTS SACKED THE AMERICAN LIBRARY IN HUE AND CALLED FOR FIRE SUICIDES AMONG THE BUDDHIST FAITHFUL. THE STUDENT RIOTERS BURNED 8,000 BOOKS IN THE HUE LIBRARY AND DEMANDED THE REMOVAL OF U.S. AMBASSADOR MAXWELL TAYLOR WITHIN 48 HOURS.

FIVE LEADING MONKS TODAY ENTERED THE FIFTH DAY OF A FAST UNTIL DEATH AIMED AT OVERTHROWING THE GOVERNMENT.
