    PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA HAS COMMISSIONED THE FIRST COMPANY OF A NEW PARA-MILITARY BATTALION OF THE ZAMBIA POLICE, FORMED TO PROTECT THE UNGUARDED BORDERS WITH ANGOLA AND RHODESIA. LAST WEEK, PRESIDENT KAUNDA REVIEWED THE FIRST PASSING-OUT PARADE AT BWANA MKUBWA.

    THE PRESIDENT SAID HE HOPED THE NEW FORCE WOULD REBEL ANY INFILTRATION INTO ZAMBIA BY UNFRIENDLY FORCES. THE BATTALION, WHICH WILL EVENTUALLY CONSIST OF FIVE COMPANIES, WILL OPERATE INDEPENDENTLY BUT WILL BE SUPPORTED BY ARMY UNITS WHEN NECESSARY.

    IT IS HOPED THAT THE PRESENCE OF THE NEW STRIKE FORCE WILL DETER ANY REPETITIONS OF RECENT BORDER INCIDENTS. THE FORCE WILL BE ARMED WITH MK IV LEE INFIELD 303'S BUT LATER THEY WILL BE SUPPLIED WITH INFIELD SLR'S.

    SYNOPSIS: THE OFFICER COMMANDING THE NEW BATTALION, SENIOR SUPERINTENDENT CAHALINE AND THE ACTING COMMISSIONER OF POLICE, A.M. NYATA, ESCORTED THE PRESIDENT TO AN OFFICIAL DAIS TO TAKE THE SALUTE.

    THE NEW BATTALION HAS BEEN FORMED TO DEFEND ZAMBIA'S BORDERS AGAINST INFILTRATION. THIS COMPANY, OF 177 MEN, IS THE FIRST TO PASS OUT OF THE TRAINING CAMP AND WILL TAKE UP POSITIONS ALONG THE BORDERS WITH ANGOLA AND RHODESIA.

    IT IS HOPED THAT THE PRESENCE OF THE STRIKE FORCE WILL DETER ANY REPETITIONS OF RECENT ALLEGED BORDER INCIDENTS. THE UNIT IS INTENDED TO ACT INDEPENDENTLY BUT WILL BE SUPPORTED BY ARMY UNITS WHEN NECESSARY.

    AFTER THE MARCH PAST, PRESIDENT KAUNDA PRESENTED AWARDS TO THE BEST CONSTABLES IN EACH SQUAD OF THE COMPANY. CONSTABLE KENYATTA WAS THE BEST OF THE FIRST SQUAD.

    CONSTABLE HAKULOBA RECEIVES HIS AWARD AS THE BEST OF THE THIRD SQUAD. THEN PRESIDENT KAUNDA ADDRESSED THE PARADE.

    THIS FIRST COMPANY OF THE PARA-MILITARY BATTALION STARTED THEIR TRAINING ON THE FIRST OF JUNE AND THE PRESIDENT CONGRATULATED THE OFFICERS AND MEN ON THEIR PROGRESS. IN ZAMBIA, A NEW FORCE TO GUARD THE BORDERS AGAINST INFILTRATION.
