  • Description

WHAT MAY BE THE PROTOTYPE OF A NEW ANTI-SUBMARINE SYSTEM DEPENDS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF A HYDROFOIL SHIP NOW UNDERGOING TRIALS WITH THE U.S.NAVY IN THE WATERS OF PUGET SOUND, NEAR SEATTLE.

CALLED THE "HIGH POINT", THE HYDROFOIL HAS BEEN SPECIALLY BUILT FOR THE NAVY.IT IS 115 FEET (35.052 METRES) LONG AND HAS A BEAM OF 32 FEET (9.754 METRES).THE SHIP IS ALMOST ENTIRELY CONSTRUCTED OF ALUMINIUM.

THE REVOLUTIONARY CONCEPT OF THE "HIGH POINT" IS ITS HIGH SPEED, WHICH WILL ENABLE THE SHIP TO QUICKLY COVER LARGE AREAS OF SEA WHILE CHASING ENEMY SUBMARINES.TWO 3,100 HORSEPOWER GAS TURBINE ENGINES GIVE THE HYDROFOIL A SPEED ON THE FOILS IN EXCESS OF 45 KNOTS.WHILE TRAVELLING ON ITS HULL, A 600 HORSEPOWER DIESEL ENGINE COMES INTO OPERATION.
