  • Description

ABOUT 1,00 PEOPLE MARCHED TO THE AMERICAN EMBASSY AND THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE IN LONDON ON SUNDAY (16 MARCH) IN A DEMONSTRATION AGAINST THE WAR IN VIETNAM. THE PROTESTORS ALSO WENT TO TRAFALGAR SQUARE WHERE THEY HELD A RALLY.

WHEN THE DEMONSTRATORS, CARRYING BANNERS AND SHOUTING SLOGANS, WENT TO THE U.S. EMBASSY IN GROSVENOR SQUARE, THEY WERE MET BY AN EQUALLY STRONG FORCE OF POLICE. THE PROTESTORS MADE ALMOST NO EFFORT TO ENTER THE EMBASSY BUILDING AND NO INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED.

FROM THE AMERICAN EMBASSY, THE DEMONSTRATORS RESUMED THEIR MARCH AND WENT TO TRAFALGAR SQUARE. THERE, WITH POLICE NEARBY, THE PROTESTORS HELD A RALLY. LEADERS OF THE DEMONSTRATION SPOKE TO THE MARCHERS FOR ABOUT AN HOUR.

THE DEMONSTRATION THEN MOVED TOWARDS WHITEHALL, THE LOCATION OF THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE. AMONG THE SLOGANS THEY SHOUTED WAS "VICTORY TO THE N.LO.F.", REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT, THE POLITICAL ARM OF THE VIET CONG. FOLLOWED BY A LARGE GROUP OF POLICE, THE PROTESTORS MARCHED DOWN THE STREET, BREAKING INTO A TROT AS THEY NEARED ITS END.

LATER, FIVE PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED AFTER FIGHT BROKE OUT BETWEEN DEMONSTRATORS AND POLICE IN FRONT OF THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE. THE FIGHTING STARTED WHEN POLICE PUSHED DEMONSTRATORS BACK FROM THE MINISTRY'S DOOR.
