  • Description

A SIX MILE LONG (10KM) PROCESSION OF ABOUT 100,000 PUNJABIS YESTERDAY MARCHED INTO THE NORTHERN INDIAN CITY OF CHANDIGARH DEMANDING ITS INCLUSION IN THE PUNJAB STATE.

CHANDIGARH HAS BEEN SERVING AS A JOINT CAPITAL OF THE PUNJAB AND HARYANA SINCE 1966 WHEN THE HINDI SPEAKING AREAS OF THE OLD PUNJAB WERE FORMED INTO THE SEPARATE STATE OF HARYANA. NOW BOTH STATES CLAIM CHANDIGARH, A MODERN CITY BUILT BY THE FRENCH ARCHITECT LE CORBUSIER.

THE INDIAN ARMY STOOD BY ON THE ALERT AND HEAVILY ARMED POLICE PATROLS GUARDED KEY POSITIONS IN THE CITY BUT THE MARCH WAS PEACEFUL.

THE DEMONSTRATORS -- MOSTLY TURBANED SIKHS -- CAME FROM NEARBY MOHALI VILLAGE WHERE THEY HAD CAMPED OVERNIGHT AND PRESENTED THEIR DEMANDS TO CITY COMMISSIONER MR. B.P. BAGCHI. THEY CARRIED PLACARDS AND SHOUTED SLOGANS ALONG THE ROUTE. A FEW THOUSAND WOMEN WERE AMONG THEM.

THE HARYANA STATE CHIEF MINISTER, MR. BANSI LAL, CHARGED THAT THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ORGANISED BY THE PUNJAB GOVERNMENT TO BRING PRESSURE ON THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT.
