Background: The steam train is making a comeback in New Zealand. New Zealand railways have put one of their models from 'the Roaring Twenties' back into working order because they think many people still have some sentiment for the pomp and power of a steam train.

It starts its run at Kingston one the south end of South Island's Lake Wakatipu, so they have called the train the 'Kingston Flyer'.

Perhaps it is that a steam train with its rising and falling rhythms seems to have a heart. Whatever it is, people will use a steam train for fun while soul-less modern trains will probably always be simply a means of travel.

The 'Flyer' cannot manage more than 40 m.p.h. (64 k.p.m.) and the track takes a rather drunken course through the hilly South Island countryside to Lumsden -- yet thousands have already made the journey, to remember the sound or show their children what rail travel was like in the days of steam.
