  • Description

A member of Egypt's National Progressive Unionist Party, Mohamad Awdeh, has criticised the Israeli standpoint in the current negotiations on Palestinian autonomy. Mr. Awdeh said the Israelis were still ignoring the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination. He also dismissed President Anwar Sadat's belief that the recent elections showed massive approval for the Middle East peace treaty. Mr. Awdeh said all discussion of the peace treaty was banned in Egypt while the election campaign was underway. The National Progressive Unionist Party was founded in 1976 and stands to the left of President Sadat's ruling Arab Socialist Union. Mr Awdeh recently visited Lebanon, and he gave a news conference in Beirut on Friday (13 July, 1979).
