Background: Tip and Tap -- the two cheerful little mascots who are symbols of the World Cup Football competition opening in West Germany on 13 June -- have a key position in the economics of the competition.
They appear on T-shirts, key rings, crockery and countless other souvenirs manufactured throughout the world. Each firm who uses them on its products has to pay a license fee to the organizing committee of the World Cup in Frankfurt. The fees are expected to amount to at least 8 million Deutschmarks (1.3 million pounds sterling) and will help to recoup the organizing committee's expenses. Tip and Tap products worth around 70 million DMs (12 million pounds) have already been sold.
Souvenir shops in Frankfurt -- the centre of the competition -- have ben enjoying a boom trade in other world cup mementos as well. One of the most popular is a record of the West German national team singing 'Football is Our Life'. Manufacturers say it will outsell any record made so far.
