  • Description

Whiteman Cup Women's tennis in London, England -- and Chris Evert beat Virginia Wade in the first day's play to put the United States into their early lead over Britain. The one-nil lead was later eroded by Sue Barker beating Rosemary Casals to put in back at one-all.

SYNOPSIS: Chris Evert losing service against the older English girl. The young American was out to avenge her straight-set defeat by Miss. Wade in the Dewar Cup, also in London, only last Saturday. Miss. Evert was also trying to extend her personal Whiteman Cup singles record to an unbeaten nine matches. She lost the point on this return service.

Match point at 30-40 to Miss Evert in the lead five games to three at one set all, after she'd played a hard, consistent game against the sometimes cleverer strike play of the South-African trained Miss. Wade. She lost the first match point to bring it to deuce, but recovered to take game, set and match.

    The final score -- 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
