  • Description

Tokyo's Ueno Zoo is going through a baby boom -- in spite of a polluted atmosphere and constant demands for zero population growth.

The animals have ignored government pleas encouraging family planning and have preferred to follow the call of nature.

But zoo authorities are thrilled with the idea. In one week an orang-outang, a zebra, two lion cubs and a monkey arrived to increase the zoo's population.

But in spite of the enthusiasm in neighbouring cages, two giant pandas have ??? to produce an offspring. Although, often mated, the Chinese pandas seem to want to remain a childless couple.

SYNOPSIS: The young orang-outang in Tokyo's Ueno Zoo was born last week during a baby boom. So far the boom has been restricted to the zoo and the rest of the Japanese capital seems to be sticking to demands for zero population growth. The orang-outang -- along with a baby zebra, two lion cubs and a monkey -- survived in spite of the polluted atmosphere. The animals have ignored government pleas encouraging family planning and have preferred to follow the call of nature.

But in spite of the obvious enthusiasm among the lions, the two giant pandas in neighbouring cages have failed to produce an offspring. Although they are often mated, the Chinese pandas have remained a childless couple. Zoo authorities are delighted with all the monkey business. The zoo's policy is to encourage breeding to keep the population at a healthy level. So the week-long baby boom was greeted enthusiastically.
