  • Description

As arrangements for official peace talks between French and Algerian officials move into their final phase, President de Gaulle is expected to release Mohammed Ben Bella, the captured rebel leader, from detention on the island of Aix, near Fourras, at the mouth of the Charente river, where he and four other rebel leaders have been held since 1959.

Maitre Hachemi Cherif, Ben Bella's lawyer, paid a visit to his client Mar 13, which he described as "routine", but more recent visits by relatives and counsel adds strength to rumours of his imminent release.

Algerians regard Ben Bella as the hero of the rebellion. Recognition of his status as a leader, and his eventual translation to the peace conference table would bring an outburst of popular enthusiasm from the Arabs.

The Algerian rebel leaders were captured in 1956 when French military fighters forced down their airliner at Algiers while on a flight from Rabat, Morocco, to Tunis. They were imprisoned at Saintes Prison for three years until being transferred to Fort Liedot on the island of Aix.
