JOINING LADY CHURCHILL AND DAUGHTER MRS. MARY SOAMES - SELDOM AWAY FROM SIR WINSTON'S BEDSIDE-WAS MR. CHRISTOPHER SOAMES, SIR WINSTON'S SON-IN-LAW, AND A FORMER MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE. FOUR OF HIS CHILDREN WENT WITH HIM.

THERE WAS ALSO A CALL BY THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF WESTMINSTER, OF WHICH SIR WINSTON IS THE FIRST HONORARY FREEMAN. OTHER FAMILY VISITORS INCLUDED SIR WINSTON'S OTHER DAUGHTER, SARAH, WHO CAME WITH MISS CELIA SANDYS, A GRAND-DAUGHTER OF SIR WINSTON.

ALL DAY, THERE WERE MANY CALLERS, BRINGING MESSAGES OF SYMPATHY AND BOUQUETS OF FLOWERS. AND AS ON THE PREVIOUS DAYS, THEY CAME FROM MANY LANDS AND FROM MANY RACES.

IN ALL, THE POLICE ESTIMATED THAT ABOUT 7,000 PEOPLE HAVE MADE THEIR WAY TO SIR WINSTON'S HOME SINCE THE ILLNESS WAS ANNOUNCED ON FRIDAY.

AMONG FAMILY MEMBERS PAYING SEVERAL VISITS DURING THE DAY WAS NEWSPAPERMAN RANDOLPH CHURCHILL, SIR WINSTON'S ONLY SON. HE HAD NOTHING TO REPORT BUT ACCORDING TO A COUSIN OF LADY CHURCHILL (MRS. SYLVIA HENLEY) WHO CALLED DURING THE AFTERNOON, SIR WINSTON WAS "VERY MUCH ASLEEP".

LORD MORAN, MAKING HIS TWICE-DAILY EXAMINATION, PROMISED A NINTH BULLETIN ON SIR WINSTON'S CONDITION ABOUT NOON (GMT) TOMORROW. A LIFELONG FRIEND, HE ACCOMPANIED SIR WINSTON ON HIS FAR-RANGING TRAVELS AS BRITAIN'S PRIME MINISTER DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, AND AS AN AUTHORITY ON DISEASES OF THE BRAIN AND THE NERVOUS SYSTEM, HELPED HIM SURVIVE TWO OTHER STROKES, ATTACKS OF PNEUMONIA AND SEVERAL BROKEN BONES.

IN HIS STATEMENT, LORD MORAN SAID SOF: SIR WINSTON HAS HAD A PEACEFUL DAY AND THERE IS NO CHANGE IN HIS CONDITION. THERE IS TO BE ANOTHER BULLETIN TOMORROW ABOUT NOON.

SOME 500 PEOPLE AS WELL AS THE NEWSMEN HAD WAITED TO HEAR THE LATEST NEWS. AT MIDNIGHT, ONLY THE CAMERAMEN, THE REPORTERS AND THE HANDFUL OF LONDON "BOBBIES" ASSIGNED TO 28, HYDE PARK GATE, REMAINED TO WATCH AND WAIT.

TWO HOURS LATER LORD MORAN WAS URGENTLY RECALLED TO SIR WINSTON'S BEDSIDE. AT 445 (GMT) HE WAS STILL THERE.
