Background: Today was a great occasion for Finish ski-jumping fans, for their idols, Karkinan and Hytia, came first and second, respectively in the World Ski-Jumping Championships.

The Ski-Stadium was packed with over 100,000 spectators, mainly from Finland but with a sprinkling of other nationalities. Sixty-one competitors representing eleven nations took part in the jumping.

As is always the case with ski-jumping, and especially world championships the atmosphere was highly charged with excitement and thrills, as skier after skier tried his utmost to jump higher than his rivals.

Deservedly, Karkinen won the competition with jumps of 74 metres and 66.5 metres, with his fellow country man Hytia second, Recknagel of East Germany third, Glass fourth and Osnes of Norway fifth.

After the winner was presented with his prize there was a grand parade of competitors, with their countries' flags.
