  • Description

Four Palestinian Arabs charged with the assassination of Jordanian Prime Minister Wasfi Tell in Cairo last November 28 were freed by an Egyptian court Tuesday (29 Feb) on bail of 1,000 Egyptian pounds (about 1,000 pounds sterling) each.

The four accused - Ziad El Helew, Khairy Khasan, Mohammed Nabil and Cawad Abou Aziza - were arrested after Prime Minister Tell was shot dead in a hail of bullets as he entered his Cairo hotel following a meeting of the joint Defence Council of the Arab League.

The court released the four after a defence counsel plea based on last wook's forensic report which said none of the weapons seized form the accused fired the bullets that killed Mr. Tell.

Throughout the hearing, the four accused have maintained they were not assassins but "legitimate executioners" avenging the killing os some 20,000 Palestinians in Jordan.

Jubilant courtroom scenes were reported when the court's president announced the decision to release the men on bail. No date for the trial has been fixed yet.
