    A leisurely sunshine cruise down the River Rhine on Monday (July 5) provided the setting for intensive summit talks between French President Georges Pompidou and West German Chancellor Willy Brandt.

    In a gesture to mark President Pompidou's 60th birthday, Herr Brandt took the regular twice-yearly conference onto the sun-drenched River Rhine.

    The water-borne conference was held on board the motorship "Loreley" as it glided past the vine-covered slopes of the Rhine Gorge and the famous rock from which the ship takes its name.

    The major theme expected to dominate the two leaders' talks is the enlargement of the Common Market. The meeting is the first top-level encounter between the French and the West Germans since last month's negotiations which opened the door to membership of the Community by Britain, Denmark, Ireland and Norway.

    SYNOPSIS: French President Georges Pompidou and his official party arrive at landing stage on the River Rhine on Monday to begin their latest summit meeting with West German Chance Willy Brandt.

    As a special gesture to mark President Pompidou's 60th birthday, Herr Brandt had arranged for the opening round of their talks to take plan during a cruise down the Rhine River.

    The Ieisurely cruise down the sun-drenched, picturesque stretch of the Rhine was to provide a relaxed setting for the first round of the intensive summit talks. The two leaders, and their official parties. boarded the motorship, "Loreley" for the voyage.

    The first deliberations between the President and the Chancellor were held on the ship's deck as it glided past the vine-covered slopes of the Rhine Gorge and the famous rock from which the ship takes its name.

    The major theme expected to dominate the two leader's talks is the enlargement of the European Common Market.

    The meeting is the first top-level encounter between the French and the West Germans since last month's negotiations which opened the door to membership of the Community by Britain, Denmark, Ireland and Norway. The cruise ended at Koblenz from where the two delegations were to travel by helicopter to Bonn, to continue their deliberations.
