England lead Group two with eight points followed by Italy with six, Finland with four and Luxembourg with none. But Italy have two games in hand and are expected to defeat Finland by at least two goals putting them in an unassailable position. Following Wednesday's match the Luxembourg Football Association said they would seek a ban on English club or international soccer in their country following serious damage caused by the England fans. Frustrated supporters smashed seats and other equipment on their way out of the stadium and three were arrested.

Background: Soccer-and England beat Luxembourg two-nil in a World Cup qualifying match on Wednesday (12 October) but may have failed to reach next year's finals in Argentina. England now lead their World Cup group but favourites Italy are expected to come out on top when they play Finland on Saturday (15 October).

SYNOPSIS: Luxembourg's part-timers, playing at home, kicked off in the dark shirts knowing that England badly needed more than five goals to make sure of their place in the World Cup finals.

England's first chance for a breakthrough fell to Terry McDermott but the Liverpool player couldn't get in a shot.

England carried on attacking throughout the first half... but were frustrated until Ray Kennedy fired home a shot to give them a one-nil lead at half-time.

In the second half manager Ron Greenwood made two substitutions, bringing on Kevin Beattie and Trevor Whymark, but England still couldn't find the target.

Eventually Paul Mariner added a second goal but that was all.

Luxembourg have never beaten England but they were satisfied on this occasion to keep the score so low.
