Background: VISNEWS filmed, May 24, at Helmstedt, checkpoint on the East-West German border, three days off soviet Premier Kruschev's deadline for the evacuation of Western troops from West berlin. unarmed British troops contrast with East German border guards armed with automatic weapons at this jumping-off point to West Berlin.
Tall look-out posts tower menacingly across the 50 metre strip of 'no mans land' separating the East-West border barriers.
West Berlin is experiencing an exodus parallel to that during the 10 year old Russian blockade of the city. Thousands of tourists have booked out of the city and many annual conventions - the Berlin wholesale clothing industry fair, doctors' congress, West German free Democratic Party-have ended early enabling members to leave Berlin before the 'fateful' May 27.
Airlines are fully booked, on the outward journeys, but West Berliners, among others, don't think Russia will move while the Geneva Conference is sitting.
The city's elders reported that West berlin is stocked with food and fuel sufficient for a year's 'siege'.
