Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and her husband Prince Bernhard arrived in the Ivory Coast capital, Abidjan, on Monday (18 February) for a three-day official visit.

The Royal couple were greeted by President Felix Houphouet-Boigny on their arrival from the Senegalese capital, Dakar, where they stayed the previous night.

Queen Juliana's visit to the Ivory Coast was in return for a state visit to the Netherlands in 1970 by President Houphouet-Boigny.

At a banquet at the Republican Palace in honour of the Royal couple, President Houphoust-Boigny said the Netherlands had shown its confidence in the Ivory Coast economy by its investments there.

He described cooperation between the two countries as a "precious link".

Queen Juliana paid tribute to what she called the "great changes wrought" in the Ivory Coast.

Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard were due to leave for a three-day official visit to Liberia on 23 February, after a two-day rest at the end of their Ivory Coast visit.

The Royal couple are to return to the Netherlands on 26 February.

SYNOPSIS: Ivory Coast dancers and drummers gave the Royal couple a traditional welcome. The Netherlands was once the third largest importer of Ivory Coast products -- mainly cocoa. But trade between the two countries has decreased in the past few years.
