  • Description

King Hussein of Jordan, due to fly to Teheran at the weekend for talks with United States President Jimmy Carter, took time off from his preparations on Tuesday (27 December) to welcome the new Chinese Ambassador.

SYNOPSIS: China's first-ever Ambassador to Jordan, Mr. Ku Hsiao-po went to Amman's Raghadan Palace to present his credentials. He was greeted by King Hussein at the start of the short official ceremony. The two countries established diplomatic relations earlier this year after Jordan had severed its diplomatic links with Taiwan.

Mr. Ku and other members of the Chinese party were also presented to senior members of the Jordanian government.

During his visit to Teheran for talks with the American President, King Hussein is expected to discuss the Middle East peace negotiations between Egypt and Israel. Mr. Carter has said he will not try to pressure King Hussein to take part in the negotiations.

In a television interview on Wednesday (28 December) Mr. Carter said he wanted to find out what role Jordan was prepared to play in the West Bank-Palestinian problem. Jordan has described Israeli proposals as a "poor response" to Egypt's peace initiative and said they were an attempt to consolidate and legitimise Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory. Jordan has said it will not co-operate in implementing these proposals.
