Background: A delegation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was received on January 16 in Islamabad by Pakistan's Interior Minister, Mr. Mohammad Harpoon. The UAE delegation led by Interior Secretary Khalfane Khamis, is an indication of the strong links developing between Pakistan and the Arab world. the talks between the two groups entered on the growing Soviet influence in the region, particularly the soviet supported government in nieghbouring Afghanistan of Babrak Karmal. The Pakistan government, led by General Zia-ul-Haq, is taking an independent stand on the Soviet incursion into Afghanistan but also cultivated strong diplomatic links with several Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia. the Saudi ruler King Fahd, had said that any interference int eh internal affairs of Pakistan would be considered by his country as detrimental to their interests. Another Arab visitor who has recently discussed defence matters in pakistan was the Saudi Foreign Affairs Minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal. He saw President Zia on January 15, the same day that the first three of 40 advanced U.S. F-16 aircraft arrived in Peshawar, capital of the north west frontier province.
