    THE CAR, WITH SOVIET REGISTRATION PLATES AND A UNION JACK, HAD EIGHTEEN HOLES IN THE BACK AND LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT.

    THE CORPORAL, SHOT IN THE STOMACH, WAS "CONSIDERABLY IMPROVED" IN CONDITION AFTER AN OPERATION IN A POTSDAMM HOSPITAL IN EAST GERMANY. A BRITISH COLONEL IN THE CAR AT THE TIME OF THE SHOOTING ESCAPED UNINJURED AND WAS ALLOWED TO RETURN TO WEST BERLIN TO REPORT THE INCIDENT.
