Background: The United States is emerging from the traumas of Vietnam and Watergate to renew support for freedom throughout the world, the American Vice-President Nelson Rockefeller said in Singapore on Sunday (March 28).

Mr. Rockefeller, who was accompanied by his wife, Happy, and a 12-member party, were greeted at the Singapore International Airport by Singapore Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, and members of the government and foreign diplomatic corps.

The vice-President was driven immediately from the airport to meet Singapore President Sheares at the Istana, the officials presidential residence.

Later in talks with Lee, the American leader was believed to have stressed that the U.S. could still maintain a military influence in Southeast Asia despite the Communist victories in Indochina and the Pullout of American troops from Thailand.

"It is true that the American people have been through some very painful and difficult experiences in recent years.

"These experience are symbolised by Vietnam and Watergate - experiences which tore our country apart emotionally," Mr. Rockefeller said.

He left Singapore on Monday after a 24-hour visit for Australia.
