Morocco defeated Niger by 5-to-2 in an elimination soccer match for the 1972 Olympics played in Casablanca on Sunday, March 28. The first half was entirely Morocco's - ending with a 3-Nil lead. But in the second half Niger put on a brave attack - scoring two goals in quick succession. It was to be Morocco's day however, and they scored twice more before the end of the match.
The Moroccan team is virtually the same one which qualified in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico City.
SYNOPSIS: Morocco - in dark shirts - kick-off at the start of an Olympics elimination match against visiting Niger. Watched by a capacity crowd of twenty-thousand in the Honour Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday, the 1970 World Cup qualifiers were full of confidence on their home ground. Although Niger took an early attack - Morocco lost no time in counter-attacking and, following a bad back-pass by one of the visiting defenders, Morocco's Faras scored the first goal with a header in the first three minutes.
With the home team in the lead, the crowd were delirious, encouraging their players to attempt another score almost immediately - but the Moroccan attack was foiled by an excellent save by Niger goalkeeper Sakou.
Disappointment again for the Moroccan fans as an undefended goal is missed.
In the seventeenth minute of play, Moroccan Captain Bamouss made up for the miss by taking his team's attack to a score with a hard drive, putting them into a two-nil lead.
Three minutes later, a pass from Filali to Faras to Petchou, who scored another goal, putting them into a three-nil lead which they held to the end of the first half, in spite of a good offensive try by Niger in the final minutes.
Niger take the offensive in the second half - and appear to have gained some incentive during the break. Five minutes of play and, after three corners, Niger's Garba scores the visitors' first goal - and, an appreciative crowd cheer the renewed effort of the Niger team.
Then, adding to the surprise of the home team, Niger once again takes the offensive and Moroccan Goalkeeper Allal is unable to stop a second goal scored by Toutou.
But this was enough for Morocco. A full-scale attack ends in a goal by Faras - followed seven minutes later by another by Captain Bamouss. A five-two win for Morocco.
