  • Description

Valued at several millions of pounds sterling, a fabulous selection of objects in gold and enamel diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls and a huge variety of other precious metals and stones made by the famous house of Faberge are going on show at London;s Victoria and Albert Museum.

SYNOPSIS: The exhibition is the museum's contribution to Jubilee year and contains over 500 items designed by the Russian goldsmith Carl Faberge, who was born in 1846 and died in 1920. Of all the pieces Faberge produced his eggs are most famous.

This one is a coronation egg and was presented to his wife by Czar Nicholas the second in 1897. The surprise concealed inside its elaborate shell is an exact replica of the Imperial coach used at Nicholas and Alexandra's coronation in 1896. This Lillies of the Valley egg was given to the Dowager Empress of Russia by Czar Nicholas in 1898. Its "surprise" consists of three oval miniatures of Nicholas and his first two children.

This religious triptych was executed by Faberge in Byzantine style and is encrusted with precious stones and metal filigree. It is dated 1895. The pieces on show in London have been assembled from collections all over the world.

An egg carved from grey agate, dated 1894 and mounted on an enamelled gold base. People who have lent items for the exhibition include members of the British Royal family, American film star Bing Crosby and the Stavros Niarchos collection. Another exquisite egg creation is this mechanical peacock and glass container, dated 1908.

A selection of eggs and clocks and a gold chair complete our look at the Faberge treasures. The display -- reflecting the luxury of a bygone age -- will be open until the end of September.
